Where Can You Find a Great Pizza in Glen Allen?

By Steve Cook

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie – that’s amore. Dean Martin was likely singing about romantic love. But, to tell the truth, sometimes nothing says loving like something from the oven especially when that something is a pizza pie.

So, the question is, “Where can you get a great pizza in Glen Allen . Here are a few suggestions. Keep in mind that we’re not proclaiming any of these to be the best. That’s such a matter of opinion. But we feel sure that you’ll find plenty to like.

Great Neapolitan in a Real Italian Restaurant –A spokesperson with Forno Piombo (FornoPiombo.com), a leading manufacturer of pizza ovens says, “A true Italian/Neapolitan pizza is characterized by its simplicity, high-quality ingredients, thin crust with a slightly chewy texture, and the use of a wood-fired brick oven for baking.

Both from personal experience and judging from the reviews of others, Little Angela’s Ristorante in the Crossridge Shopping Center at 10246 Staples Mill Road (AngelasRVA.com) is the real deal. “Best Italian ever,” touts Wally S. What’s more authentic than a Margherita pizza? After all, the Neapolitan was created for King Umberto I and Queen Margherita when they visited Naples in the 1880s.

Both Little Angela’s and Angela’s (425 Ridge Road) are owned and operated by the Palazzotto family, who’ve been serving up authentic Italian food for 40 years.

Great Pizza in a Strip Shopping Center – Tucked away in a very nondescript strip shopping center at 1592 Mountain Road is Rapid Pizza (MyRapidPizza.com). Carol C. shares, “Their Signature Pizza (a white pizza) and their Deluxe Authentic are both delicious!” The folks here pride themselves on using only fresh ingredients, a must for truly authentic Italian pizza. The Signature offers grilled chicken, spinach, tomatoes, and fresh garlic on mozzarella cheese.

Great Toppings – I hear lots of raves for Mellow Mushroom in GreenGate at 12171 W. Broad Street (MellowMushroom.com). Bobby H. raves, “My favorite the last couple of years has been Mellow Mushroom. Their version of a deluxe pizza, with a little bit of everything, is their House Special, a thin crispy crust, stone-baked creation.” Bobby says “a little bit of everything.” Their menu says, “Red sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, Italian sausage, ground beef, honey ham, applewood-smoked bacon, black olives, sliced mushrooms, Roma tomatoes, green peppers, sweet onions, and more mozzarella.” How can you top that?

Great Pizza Where You Don’t Expect to Find Pizza – Jimmy W. tells me, “Redemption BBQ in the Shops at Wellesley (3420 Lauderdale Dr.; RedemptionBBQ.com) does a Chicago-style pizza that is very good.” Pizza at a BBQ joint? This I gotta see. Sure enough, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, one can enjoy an authentic Chicago-style deep dish pizza, which features a crispy and flaky butter crust filled with cheese, meat, and tomato sauce. You have to order in person or by phone and be ready to wait about an hour for your pizza. But it’s worth the wait (and the weight).
