Looking out the window of our plane flying into Vancouver gave me a little glimpse of things to come on our impending cruise through Alaska, a land of towering glaciers, majestic wildlife, and breathtaking scenery – a land that beckons the adventurous soul. My wife and I embarked on an unforgettable journey through this natural wonderland aboard the Ruby Princess, a luxurious cruise ship designed to provide comfort and world-class amenities while experiencing the wonders of the “Last Frontier.”
Our Alaskan odyssey began in Vancouver, British Columbia, where you can explore the vibrant waterfront district, wander through Stanley Park’s lush greenery, or visit Granville Island’s bustling public market before setting out on your voyage. Taking in the city’s skyline fading into the distance as we departed, offered the promise of Alaska ascending on the horizon.
The Ruby Princess carves a path through the Inside Passage, a network of channels and islands known for its spectacular scenery. Spot playful whales breaching the surface, keep an eye out for majestic bald eagles soaring overhead, and marvel at the towering peaks piercing the Alaskan sky.
The itinerary includes stops in charming towns steeped in history and natural
wonders. Ketchikan, the “Salmon Capital of the World,” boasts colorful totem poles and a chance to sample the freshest seafood. In Juneau, Alaska’s capital city. There’s also time to explore the Alaska State Museum, wander through the historic district, or take a thrilling floatplane tour over glaciers.
Skagway, a gold rush boomtown, offers a glimpse into the past with its preserved boardwalks and historic buildings. We truly enjoyed all these new experiences. A whale-watching boat tour offered the captivating experience of observing the huge sea creatures at play. You’d see the spout first before the whale breached the surface of the water.
Our kayaking adventure was tranquil yet intriguing, as it offered an opportunity to catch a glimpse of smaller sea life such as starfish and jellyfish in the crystal clear water, Our tour guide pulled a jellyfish from the water and after explaining that they were edible, he took a bite. We didn’t see that coming.
Back on board our cruise ship, we enjoyed a refreshing dip in one the four pools, indulged in a pampering treatment at the spa, and challenged ourselves in the onboard gym.
Evenings on board offered opportunities to enjoy Broadway-caliber shows, dance the night away at nightclubs, or simply unwind with a cocktail and breathtaking views from the top deck. As I had discovered on past cruises, one of the main attractions is food, food, and more food. I loved the pizza and yes it was right next to the Ice Cream Parlor – a perfect duo and all you can eat, too.
A highlight of any Alaskan cruise is undoubtedly the glaciers. Witnessing these majestic giants calving into the sea is a humbling experience. Some itineraries include a visit to Glacier Bay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you’ll be surrounded by awe-inspiring glaciers and diverse wildlife.
A cruise through Alaska on the Ruby Princess is more than just a vacation; it’s a voyage of discovery. It’s a chance to reconnect with nature, immerse yourself in a unique culture, and create memories that will last a lifetime. From the breathtaking scenery to the unforgettable wildlife encounters, to the first-class cuisine and entertainment, this Alaskan adventure will leave you breathless and yearning to return.
