I’d never really given much thought to the Bundt cake until I had a chance, recently, to visit with Leo LaPointe in his Nothing Bundt Cakes shop in Carytown. Leo and his partners also own and operate the shops at 11845 W. Broad Street in Short Pump and in Midlothian at 11419 Midlothian Turnpike.
I’d have to say that from now on when I’m thinking cakes, it’s Nothing Bundt Cakes for me. While the creation of the Bundt cake only dates back to the mid-20th century when H. David Dalquist invented the Bundt pan, the confection on which it is based, the Gugelhupf, has a history that goes back to Medieval Austria. The traditional Gugelhupf was a popular treat at community celebrations such as weddings.
What a fitting history when one considers that Nothing Bundt Cakes has quickly become the cake of choice at virtually any type of celebration. If you’re planning a birthday party, a baby shower, an anniversary, or a retirement party, just to name a few, make it more festive with a delicious cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes.
They even do wedding cakes and will deliver and set it up for you. LaPointe tells me that he can provide custom-decorated cakes for any occasion and for virtually any size group. “We recently supplied the cakes for a group of 5,000,” he says. “And we did it with three days notice.”

You’ll be delighted at what the expert decorators can create. Look at some of the suggestions on the website – NothingBundtCakes.com. But to really whet your appetite, head into the shop, look around and browse the “idea book.” I was mesmerized by the variety of creative, colorful custom cakes from which to choose. There’s a cake to complement any occasion.
You can also download the Nothing Bundt Cakes app, which offers reward points, free cakes, even a free birthday cake. Plus, you can order your custom cake through the app or online.
You could call the shop Nothing Bundt Celebrations. Because even when you have nothing special to celebrate, you can simply celebrate the fact that your taste buds are in for a real treat.
Try the single-serving Bundtini, which is available in a box of 12. Choose from a variety of flavors. LaPointe says, “We always have 10 flavors in the bakery case, including our top four – the chocolate chocolate chip, the red velvet, the white chocolate raspberry, and the lemon.” He adds that there are also gluten-free varieties.
After hearing about all the flavors, my only thought was, let me eat cake. I sampled both the chocolate chocolate chip and the strawberries and cream. It was love at first bite.
I tried the Bundtlet, which is a step up in size from the Bundtini. It was large enough for me and my wife. There is also an 8-inch cake, which serves 8 people, and a 10-inch cake, which can serve up to 18 folks.
What was most impressive to me was the moistness of these cakes. That’s due to the unique design. LaPointe says, “Traditional cakes tend to be denser and drier .” He explains that the very makeup of this popular cake with the hole in the middle contributes to that moistness and its superior taste.
LaPointe who had been in the restaurant business for 30 years before opening his first Nothing Bundt Cake shop in Short Pump in December, 2021, says that it was the quality of the product that motivated him to make the transition to cakes.
