The gentle flow of a winding river has calmed and mesmerized people from the beginning of time. For a moment, imagine sitting on a shady bank, with your toes in the water and a book in hand, while watching falling leaves drift by. They bob and swirl as they pass farther and farther away before disappearing around a curve. Where do they end up? And just what is around that bend? Now, imagine experiencing the river from a different perspective while gliding along in a kayak, raft, or canoe, and seeing firsthand what was once beyond your view.
Here in Powhatan is a calm and beautiful stretch of the James River that is popular with paddlers who enjoy taking a leisurely excursion on the water. It’s suitable for all skill levels, and ideal for beginners and families. Originating in Powhatan State Park and culminating at the bridge on Maidens Road, the five-mile journey lasts approximately five hours but never leaves town. This captivating day trip offers a blend of history and nature…lofty hardwood hills once traversed by Captain John Smith, peaceful isolation, and multiple sandy islands–great spots for a lunch break and a little exploration. If you’re into birdwatching, keep an eye out for bald eagles, osprey, kingfishers, and various species of shoreline butterflies. Thousands of pawpaw trees line the river and are loaded with fruit in the fall.
Now that school is out, the park tends to be busier, so if you’d like more solitude, try launching early on a weekday morning or later in the afternoon during the summer months.
Tips for a great paddle: Check water levels before heading out. It is recommended to bring sturdy water shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, lunch or snacks, and plenty of water. Powhatan State Park periodically hosts guided paddle events, so check their schedule for more information. Additionally, for those without their own equipment, nearby outfitters offer kayak rentals, shuttles, and guided tours as well.
Whether you’re gliding along the river, fishing amid the ripples, or just savoring a picnic on a secluded sandy beach, this scenic float offers an ideal opportunity to reset, unwind, and enjoy a peaceful day on the water. By all means, then, discover what’s waiting for you around the bend!
