Where Can You Find a Great Bowl of Soup Along Hull Street Road?

By Steve Cook:

Perhaps you feel about soup the way master chef Louis P. De Gouy expressed it:  “Good soup is one of the prime ingredients of good living.” On the other hand, your sentiments may be more in line with those of Jay Leno, who said, “Soup is just a way of screwing you out of a meal.” Regardless, there are times, especially on a chilly late fall afternoon when nothing satisfies better than a steaming bowl of soup. Sure, you can open a can of Campbell’s, add water and voila! But wouldn’t it be more fun to visit one of your favorite local restaurants and sample their delicious fare? If you choose the latter, here are some suggestions.

Latitude Seafood Co.

With locations in Westchester Commons as well as its newest spot in Duck Ridge Landing at 14400 Hull Street Road, there’s a Latitude Seafood near you wherever you may live in Midlothian. My favorite is the new location overlooking the Falling Creek Reservoir and speaking of “falling, I’ve fallen in love with their She-Crab Soup.  If you’ve never sampled this little sip of pure joy, why not remedy that soon?

Regardless of the season, this creamy concoction consisting of lump crab, cream, and dry sherry is a crowd favorite.  As you may already be aware, in addition to a wonderful menu, Latitude offers one of the best happy hours in the area and get this – during happy hour the bowl of soup is reduced from $12 to $8. Latitude not only offers a daily afternoon happy hour, but has extended hours of such happiness on the weekend. Check their website for details (LatitudeSeafoodCo.com).

The Grill at Waterford

When the weather outside becomes frightful, the Grill at Waterford becomes even more delightful, what with the cozy family-like atmosphere and the roaring fireplace. So much of the delectable fare in this popular restaurant, located in the Waterford Shopping Center (13548 Waterford Place), is made from scratch, which is perfect when you’re itching for an inviting homestyle meal.

As you might expect, among their homey recipes, you’ll find a variety of daily

soup specials. My favorite is the loaded potato soup.  Check ‘em out online at TheGrillAtWaterford.com.

 Taylor’s at Market Square

Okay, I admit it. I love this place. When I describe it as a dive bar, I mean that in a very positive way because I love dive bars. One reviewer describes Taylor’s as reminding him of a ski lodge bar and grill. I can see that too. One thing for sure, if you’re looking for great food, refreshing adult beverages, and exceptionally friendly service, this place has it all.

Now, as for the soup, chef Matt Haymaker tells me that starting this month and through the fall and winter seasons, the restaurant will be offering a rotating selection of homemade soups including chicken noodle, beef vegetable, and wedding soup (small noodles and sausage in a chicken stock base). Matt says his favorite is the loaded potato soup with potatoes, cheese, and bacon bits. Of course, Taylor’s very popular chili is served daily, year-round.

I asked Matt why he thinks Taylor’s continues to get such great reviews for its food. He says, “It’s all because of the guys I have working with me.” This place is filled with great guys and gals in both the front and the back of the house.
