The brilliant ambers, vibrant goldens, and deep burgundies have already begun overtaking the scenery. Thankfully, we live in a state that is abundant in locations for enjoying the fall season.
When you think of places to visit in the fall, the lake might not be the first thing that comes to mind, but maybe don’t dismiss it so quickly. In previous years, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation has listed Bear Creek Lake State Park (22 Bear Creek Lake Rd, Cumberland) as one of the top places in central Virginia to enjoy fall foliage, and I’d have to agree. The diverse mix of oak, maple, and hickory trees creates a remarkable backdrop of reds, oranges, and gold, enhancing any hiking, biking, or fishing adventure. Since the park is often less crowded in the fall, it proves to be a peaceful way to enjoy the outdoors.
Smith Mountain Lake, located in both Bedford and Franklin Counties in Southwestern Virginia, presents a picturesque scene to take in the season. Imagine the calming effect of the sunlight shining through the trees, creating colorful reflections on the shimmering waters. If you’re a little apprehensive about the temperatures being cooler at the lake, then the upcoming SML Chili Festival on Saturday, November 8, might be just what is needed to “heat” up the trip. If you’re like me, then you try to avoid D.C. traffic at all costs, but for Great Falls Park (9200 Old Dominion Drive, McLean), I concede. The stunning foliage of fall transforms this setting into an astounding scene. Contemplate the magnificence of nature as you view the rushing waters brushing over the jagged rocks, surrounded by rugged cliffs, and brilliant autumn colors.
Seeing Breaks Interstate Park
(627 Commission Circle, Breaks, VA) in person reveals why it’s known as the “Grand Canyon of the South.” Nestled in the Appalachian Mountains, the park offers breathtaking vistas at every turn. The transformation of the landscape as you hike to the overlooks rewards you with outstanding views at every switchback. Witnessing the dramatic gorge carved into the mountains, making way for the river below, is a sight you’ll want to share with everyone.
The splendor of autumn will remain for less than a month, so make plans now to visit these locations before the bareness of winter takes hold. Don’t miss your chance to experience Virginia’s fall foliage at its peak.
