Bakeries—A Cornerstone of our Communities

The shop bell rang as a young mom with two rambunctious little boys entered the bake shop and approached the goody-laden display case with eager anticipation. “I want a Jelly donut!” hollered the one as his brother elbowed him to one side and loudly declared, “I want sprinkles!” Before their mother could separate them, a cheerful man wearing an apron appeared from the back wiping his hands with a towel. He knew this trio well, because they stopped by often. Quickly he handed Mom an assembled box complete with their favorite fresh baked treats and a big stack of napkins. They’ll be back again next week.

Many of us have happy memories tied to bakeries: coming in from the cold and enjoying a sweet treat along with a piping hot beverage on a chilly winter’s day. Or how about getting donuts after school, choosing a custom cake for a special occasion, or maybe grabbing a bag of warm rolls before a family dinner.

But even in sad times, people find solace there. Decades ago, I remember our local family-owned bakery donating their kitchen to allow residents the opportunity to bake hundreds of cookies for a huge memorial service in honor of a respected community member who had passed away suddenly. They went above and beyond, and the community loved them for it.

So, take a moment to celebrate these stalwart scone and strudel soldiers who wake before dawn and skillfully create the delectable works of art that fill today’s baskets and display cases with everyone’s favorites: rustic breads, flaky pastries, signature cookies, as well as custom cakes and mouth-watering pies. Bakers are real people, with real talent, and real heart. And our local artisans would appreciate your support. There’s a sweet treat waiting for you at one of the following bakeries nearby.
