Discovering Happiness at a Local Tea House

By Kim Amboy :

A steaming cup of your favorite hot tea on a cold January day—what could be better? Well, imagine celebrating the world’s most beloved beverage for the entire month! Indeed, across the United States tea aficionados are rejoicing, because National Hot Tea Month has officially arrived.

Why Hot Tea?

Like my parents, I’ve always been an avid coffee drinker and must admit that, until a few weeks ago, I knew very little about tea. As kids, my siblings and I were given mugs of herbal concoctions whenever we were sick—not a pleasant memory, to be sure! But recently, I had an enlightening chat with local author and tea enthusiast, Maria Tucciarone, whose passion for the subject was truly contagious. She did her best to set me straight.

I learned that coffee generally contains around twice the caffeine of tea, which leads to quick alertness but often ends with a “caffeine crash”. Conversely, true teas contain substances which slow caffeine absorption for a milder, longer-lasting effect. Maria stressed how very different tea culture is from java shops…while coffee fuels fast paced, busy mornings, tea parlors invite relaxation and encourage people to slow down. Some are casual while others are fancy, but all of them are delightful and serene places where patrons go to pamper themselves. Finally, she shared a list of her favorite places to get me started and assured me, “This will be your happy place!”

Tea Culture, Here I Come!

I invited a friend and eventually decided on a place closest to home: Tea with Kip in Midlothian (reservations are required). The owner, Kip, a lovely and kind woman, warmly greeted us as we arrived. We spent a charming and very personable afternoon seated amidst the whimsical, eclectic decor which was carefully arranged for maximum visual impact. The effect was enchanting, and we hadn’t even eaten yet! Soon, tea and goodies started arriving at our table with the help of Kip’s hardworking assistants, Sherrie and Marion. Everything is organic and made from scratch: pastries, fruit, tea sandwiches, and elegant entrees served in courses. At long last, I tasted my first cucumber sandwich (where has this stuff been all my life?) and spread a huge dollop of Devonshire cream over a freshly baked scone while sipping delicious tea from a beautiful cup. My goodness, I felt pampered beyond measure by those lovely ladies. Yes, I could totally get used to this…tea houses rock!

Takeaway

While I’m not about to dispense with my morning cup of joe, this recent tea house excursion has broadened my beverage horizons immensely. Tea is not just for soothing sniffles; it’s a delicious way to savor and relax. Why not join me this month in recreating the tea house experience at home by dusting off that old teapot, and brewing something warm, cozy, and calming. With your prettiest cup and saucer in hand, nibble on a few dainty cookies while you sip. Oh, and don’t forget…pinkies up!
