CREATING YOUR OWN BACKYARD OASIS

If a man’s (or woman’s) home is their castle, then what does that make the backyard? Certainly, if one’s home offers sanctuary, privacy, and a place of enjoyment, one should be able to take that to the outdoors.

Imagine your backyard as a beautiful extension of your personal sanctuary. While the concept of transforming one’s yard into a serene retreat in which to commune with nature, as well as to entertain friends and family, may seem daunting, such a transformation can be done in stages.

First, make a plan based on your priorities. You can start small and let that oasis develop progressively. What would your personal oasis look like?

Make a list. Perhaps outdoor furniture would be at the top of that list. Now, imagine the enjoyment you’ll be sharing when you invite your friends to an event on the patio. This oasis can provide a perfect retreat in warm weather, and such additions as a firepit or outdoor fireplace will allow you to enjoy your backyard virtually year round.

Flipping burgers on the grill may be your ultimate idea of a backyard feast. However, maybe you desire to up your game by incorporating a full outdoor kitchen into your ultimate oasis.

Do you want even more to enjoy. Depending upon the size of your yard, a spa and or a pool could provide that extra zing.

Top it all off with the perfect pavers, tasteful landscaping, and well-placed lighting. Now that your list is coming together, let’s drill down deeper in determining how your personal tastes can be reflected in this burgeoning oasis.

Let’s go back to that list and start making some notes.

HAVE A SEAT

Mixing and matching your outdoor furniture is a fun, creative way to show off your tastes. Diversity may be at the top of your list, but consistency in color and/or texture serves to create a cohesive look. Even if the textures are diverse, such as combining wood, metal, and wicker, use similar hues or complementary colors. Don’t forget about accessories such as cushions, rugs, and planters.

FEEL THE WARMTH

Having an outdoor heater allows you to make the most of your patio throughout the year. It serves to create a cozy and inviting space for your own quiet enjoyment as well as when entertaining friends.

Whether you choose a propane, electric, or natural gas heater, you will want to consider not only your personal preferences but what will work best in the space you will be using. Instant heat and portability often make propane the perfect choice. While installation is involved, a natural gas heater may be the most cost effective. And, yes, electricity generally limits the area that can be heated,  but it’s convenient and just needs a place to plug in.

NOW WE’RE COOKING

As you plan your outdoor kitchen, consider your space, functionality, and personal lifestyle. Is a hotdog with a bun your perfect outdoor dining preference or are you a true foodie who wants to display your gourmet prowess? There are virtually limitless options but consider carefully just how you intend to use the space. When considering countertops, keep in mind that it’s not just the type of material that matters but the space and layout are also of paramount importance. Many shortchange themselves by not allowing sufficient space to perform their culinary magic.

And when it comes to your choice of appliances, the sky is the limit – oh yeah, your budget as well. Gas, electric, charcoal, infrared, and teppanyaki grills along with smokers, pizza ovens, and burners support the creativity of any chef – amateur or pro.

THE WETTER THE BETTER

Your pool doesn’t have to be a simple rectangular cement pond (a la The Beverly Hillbillies) Use the internet as an aid to inspiring you. And, of course, select a reputable contractor to do the job.

PAVING THE WAY

Again, your options are many. Concrete, brick, and natural stone are among the more popular pavers. Stunning hardscaping features add the perfect touch to your personal oasis. Durability and functionality are two important considerations.

LET THEIR BE LIGHT

Let your oasis sparkle with creative and functional lighting. Reflection is vital, especially when reflecting the real you. String lights can work magic. Wall lights add a touch of elegance. Turn an average outdoor space into a carriage-house look with the proper lanterns. Create a rustic, farmhouse look or an appearance of opulence with just the right outdoor chandelier. Illuminate your trees, shrubbery, and flowers with landscape lighting. Your guests will be aglow with excitement when your outdoor lighting comes to life as the sun sinks slowly in the west.

The above is only designed to stimulate your imagination. Now, make your own list, choose your priorities, and talk to friends as well as experts in the business. Get recommendations and referrals and get ready to create your own backyard oasis.
