It doesn’t matter how old or young you are. It matters not whether you play with an opponent or just against yourself. It may be one of the most frustrating tests of patience you’ll ever experience, but also one of the most rewarding. And there’s a real possibility it might become a lifestyle, even an obsession. For the sake of landing a small ball into a 4-inch hole, players keep coming back for more, because there’s nothing like it…yes, golf is a game for everyone.
To all our Powhatan neighbors who love the game, we bear sad news and pay tribute to a longtime Powhatan landmark—one that has brought jobs, opportunity, and joy to the community. After 52 years, Mill Quarter Plantation Golf Course will close at the end of October. Following the 2025 deaths of owner Dave K. Daniels and general manager David P. Daniels, the family announced that the property is now under contract with a local developer, and, as of this writing, has not been identified. The property’s future is currently unknown and will be determined by its new owner.
A little history: The course was originally designed by Edmund Ault on 1,460 acres of the historic Randolph Plantation, and has been described as lovely and quaint, situated amidst rolling hills and woodlands. Dave (who golfed for Ohio State and was a teammate of Jack Nicklaus) along with his business partner Pat Carey, purchased the course in 1973 and opened in fall 1974 during the national gas shortage.
Operated by four generations of the Daniels family, Mill Quarter remained a close-knit family endeavor. For Dave, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere across the 307-acre course was always a top priority. A few of today’s “oldsters” fondly remember working at the course in their youth and appreciated how the Daniels treated them like family. They enjoyed working with Dave and recall it as a fun and friendly place. To them, Mill Quarter will always be “my home course.”
Saying goodbye to a longtime friend is never easy, especially one woven into so many fond recollections. But if the opportunity arises, take some time to visit the course and play a round. Golf enthusiasts in Powhatan and around the Richmond area would like to say, “Well done, Mill Quarter, and thank you for all the amazing memories!”
